THE METHOD by Peter Schmidt

"Starting with 120 pieces of card,each piece had things stuck on it(mostly my own old work, also reproductions, photographs, documents, pages from books), and was then overprinted with a rectangle of transparent silk screen colour. Then more things were stuck on, overprinted again, stuck on, printed again. Most of the Monoprints have three layers of collage and three layers of colour..."

This photo was taken by a friend of Sarah's, during a stay in London, in the fall of 1979. This was the last time they saw each other before he died in January of 1980.

ANALYTICAL INTRODUCTION by Jasia Reichardt

"What title can one give120 pictures of uniform size which are printed and collaged and which incorporate the tangible residue of one's life in the form of photographs, pages of books read, possessed and made, drawings and early works, letters and other mementos belonging to 35 years of experience? Peter Schmidt has called these works for want of a better word or phrase that would evoke more readily what they really are, Monoprints. The Monoprints were made between July and November 1969."

Photographed in Germany. A few years later, he and his mother would flee Nazi Germany for England, to be followed shortly thereafter by his step father, Raimund. His siblings were born in England, Oliver in October 1938 and Sarah in February 1940. Peter's mother was Jewish, Raimund was not, a union that was forbidden(considered to be a racial disgrace)in Germany at the time.

Sarah has been very supportive of the endeavor to cement Peter's legacy. Many thanks to her for sending this, and several other pictures of him taken throughout his life.
